DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Last month I asked you to be impeccable with your word. This month we move our attention to the 2nd of Don Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements.
•1. Be Impeccable with your Word
•2. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
•3. Don’t make assumptions
•4. Always do your best.
How many times have you heard someone say with some regret in the tone of their voice “If I knew then what I know now……..” Well that’s how I feel about the countless times I allowed small things to take on a life of their own because I took a comment personally. Taking things personally caused me to try to defend my position which led to unnecessary conflict.
If I had known that don’t take anything personally was about believing that the opinions of others are none of my business, I might not have felt hurt so many times.
If I had known that don’t take anything personally was about learning to trust myself and my beliefs about who I am – I might have stepped forward more often to act on things I felt were right for me.
If I had known that don’t take anything personally was about knowing that whatever some else thinks or feels is their problem not mine - I might have understood that people see the world through their own eyes and that’s ok. I don’t have to win every time.
So, now that I am aware of how freeing life can be when I don’t take anything personally, I’m inviting you to do the same thing by participating in this month’s exercise.
EXERCISE
For the next four weeks DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
When you don’t take anything personally you accept that nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
Build on last month’s experience of being impeccable with your word by refusing to take things personally, emancipate yourself. You’ll love it.
In August we’ll move on to Agreement #3.
