BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD

More than a year ago, I read the book The Four Agreements, written by Don Miguel Ruiz. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the book offers a practical guide to personal freedom and reveals the source of our self-limiting beliefs that can rob us of joy. The Four Agreements are –

1. Be Impeccable with your Word
2. Don’t take anything personally
3. Don’t make assumptions
4. Always do your best.

As a coach I am always on the look out for nuggets of wisdom that can enhance my life and by extension the lives of my clients. Like many people, I work very deliberately at living my best life possible, but when I’m having an “off day”, I use the agreements to evaluate where I’ve gone astray. The agreements are like a life enriching roadmap. When you use them every day, you can be guaranteed that not only will you feel empowered by your own behaviour, your interactions with others will improve.

This month’s article isn’t intended to be a book review, I’m inviting you to recapture your personal power one agreement at a time by participating in the following exercise.

EXERCISE:

For the next four weeks BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD.

To be impeccable with your word means you speak with integrity. You say only what you mean. You avoid using your words against others and especially yourself. That means, eliminate gossiping and pay close attention to the negative self-talk. Replace negative thoughts with motivating ideas. For example, if you catch yourself thinking “I can’t do that” replace it with “I’m going to do my best” oh and make sure you use your journal to capture your progress.

Make being impeccable with your word a fun way to monitor your thoughts and your words. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes in you.

Next month we’ll move on to Agreement #2.
